Grün Stadt Zürich contributes 50 %
Anyone greening, removing sealed surfaces or making ecological enhancements in the settlement area of the City of Zurich receives a one-off contribution from the «Stadtgrün» funding programme of 50 percent of the total costs – up to Fr. 1 000 000 per measure. Only nature-friendly greening is eligible for funding: we work with at least 80 % native plants and avoid invasive non-native plants. The former programmes «Mehr als Grün» and «Vertikalbegrünung» now operate under this programme. We compile the documents and submit the application to the city on your behalf.

Facade greening with climbing supports or on freestanding climbing structures – including two years of establishment maintenance on request.
Green Roofs
Extensive and intensive green roofs on existing buildings, with intensive green roofs also available for new buildings.
Ecological Enhancement
Nature-friendly green spaces and wildflower meadows outdoors – habitats for native species.
Removing Existing Sealed Surfaces
Sealed surfaces are opened up so that the soil can absorb water again and rainwater can infiltrate.
Tree Planting
New trees – including four years of development maintenance with watering and young tree pruning on request.
Tree Preservation
Care and monitoring to preserve the value of valuable existing trees.
Nature-friendly – with at least 80 % native plants
Funding supports nature-friendly, ecologically valuable designs. We therefore plant with at least 80 percent native plants – suited to the site and without invasive non-native plants. This creates habitats for native animals, and the area qualifies as ecologically valuable.
Maintenance Is Subsidised Too
On request, the two years of establishment maintenance for a greening project and the four years of development maintenance for newly planted trees can be included in the funding – meaning half of these costs are covered too. This requires a separate application, which we prepare for you together with the maintenance concept.
How the Application Process Works
- 1. Consultation
Grün Stadt Zürich offers a free initial consultation on all eligible measures. We assess your space and advise you on what makes sense and qualifies for funding. - 2. Application Before Work Begins
The application must be submitted before work begins and is processed electronically via the city's web portal. We compile the quotation, overview plan, planting list and maintenance concept and submit the application on your behalf. - 3. Implementation and Final Accounting
The contribution is paid after the final accounting. The funded measure must be retained and professionally maintained for ten years. On request, the years of maintenance immediately after construction can be included in the funding – they require a separate application, which we prepare for you.
The contributions apply to properties within the settlement area of the City of Zurich and to measures that are not already required by law. For gardens outside the city, we check cantonal or municipal funding options.
